67 acres of beautiful woodland set in the foot hills of Dartmoor.
Burley Wood is set just outside the hamlet of Watergate, in a picturesque location overlooking Dartmoor. The wood is accessed via a woodland track which passes Burley Cottage and leads to a parking area about 300m beyond.
The wood is made up of a mixture of Sitka Spruce, Douglas Fir, oak and conifers as well as broad leaf specimens. There are a number of forest tracks throughout the woodland and the exposed shale that underlies the forest floor provides a ready source of track building material.
At the top of the hill is a Motte and Bailey and ancient Settlement, which is all remains of what was an old hill fort. The views from the top of the hill are spectacular, particularly toward Dartmoor.
OKEHAMPTON The town has many attractions including the spectacular ruins of Okehampton Castle which date back to Norman times and the beautiful expansive parkland at Simmons Park with leisurely river side walks, ornamental gardens and a Swiss style chalet, multi sports facilities and playing areas for all ages as well as the Parklands Leisure Centre. The Town Hall, a handsome building with granite facade built in 1685 adds a touch of elegance to the town centre which also boasts a number of vibrant shopping arcades as well as the acclaimed Museum of Dartmoor Life.
