Our History
Helmores was founded in 1699 by a gentleman named William Helmore, who handled sales of cottages, farms and land from his premises in Newton St Cyres near Exeter. The firm quickly grew in success and for the next three centuries was passed down through the Helmore family from father to son. Just after the First World War, Frederick John Helmore was joined in the business by his son Herbert Mark (Bert) who unfortunately had no sons to take on the business when he passed away in 1965. His partner since 1928, Alan Stoyle snr, took over the reigns.
Alan Stoyle snr's sons John and Alan joined the business in 1957 and 1965 respectively, although both have now retired, and today the firm is run and owned by Rob Stoyle (Alan's son) who joined the firm in 1990 together with business partner Philip Morgan. Rob & Phil have taken the firm to the next level, and using their expert IT skills, local knowledge, professionalism and unrivalled experience of 300 years of property sales, Helmores continues to be THE leading firm of estate agents in the area.
In 1979 we moved offices from our Union Road premises (now the National Farmers Union offices) to our more prominent offices at 103 High Street.
In 1987, we joined the expanding Team network of estate agents. Team comprises of a group of independent computer-linked estate agents throughout the UK who combine their efforts to deliver buyers and sellers an unrivalled service. Team agents go the extra mile to help make moving simple and faster. All Team offices share their properties with each other giving the buyer or seller far more coverage and choice across the country.
In 1994 we moved offices again, from 103 High Street to our current much larger and more central premises at 117 High Street where we have a huge window display and a tremendous amount of foot traffic through the front door!
In 2007 we were awarded Guild Status with the Guild of Professional Estate Agents, giving us direct access to the lucrative London and international investor markets in our representative office at 119-121 Park Lane, Mayfair (close to Marble Arch). The office has a prominent 40ft window display and uses Touchscreen and back-lit projector technology to show your property at its best. Should you need to call this prestigious office, the telephone number is 020 7409 4657 and the London team will do their best to look after your needs!
What would William Helmore have made of it all way back in 1699??
